In physics, buoyancy (pronounced /ˈbɔɪ.ənsi/) is the upward force, caused by fluid pressure, that keeps things afloat. This can occur only in an accelerated frame of reference (such as gravity or a centrifugal forces) defining a "downward" direction along the acceleration.
